Do you have photos or other images in an online portfolio or website that is for display purposes only? Have you ever wondered if someone is using your images without your permission? There's an interesting website called TinEye.com that let's you upload an image (or provide a URL to an image), and it will search billions or images online to see if it can find a match. It doesn't try to match the name of the file, but instead it matches the actual image itself. The technology seems pretty impressive, so give it a try yourself. It's free and fun!

Caution: Private Label Resale Rights Products

If you sell your own information products online, then you might be familiar with certain products that state they have, "Private Label Rights." Generally, these types of licenses allow you to do almost anything you want with the content provided. This might include using pieces of it on your website, in a newsletter, or even to repackage as a new product.

However, be careful what Private Label Rights (PLR) products you actually use. You don't want to be caught in a copyright infringement issue later on when you find out the material was stolen from someone else. It won't matter if you didn't know it was stolen material. If you use it, then it's at your own risk.

How can you be certain that the person selling the PLR product is the original creator and owner of that content? Do you personally know the person? Some people that use their "names" on websites and sales pages aren't even their real names. They are just "pen" names or made-up names.

After doing some "Googling" I found a website where someone had asked this question back in 2008, and an interesting discussion occurred from it. Click here to read the forum thread on the Warrior Forum. Nothing in the thread can be used as legal advice, but some of the people ended up saying that the PLR products weren't meant to be used the way the way most people thought, but to be more of a guide for others to create their own products.

It seems like a viscious cycle doesn't it? Another site called Plagiarism Today has an article called, "The Dangers of Private Label Rights (PLR) Content," that does a better job explaining some of the issues around Private Label Products, and about who normally tries to benefit from them. Plagiarism Today also has some other very interesting articles around Plagiarism, so you might want to take a deeper look at it.
